Description of the work
Description of the work
On both sides, the painting features two very traditional iconographic typologies. On the front, Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary, is depicted imparting good precepts to the Madonna as a child (who, in fact, is depicted holding an open book). On the right, the lily, a symbol of purity, appears. The subject depicted on the back is the penitent Magdalene, who, according to the Golden Legend, retreated to the desert to meditate after the death of Jesus. Traditionally, a skull appears, symbolizing the transience of man and his vanities.
The artist who created this double-sided diptych places great importance on a solid design structure within the composition. Indeed, one can notice how the forms and facial features are delineated with a very marked linearity. This linearity is particularly evident in the articulation of the folds of the robes. The figures are solid and display a certain volume, emphasized by the loose tunics. The spatial setting is conventional, especially in the painting of Saint Anne, where, behind the parapet, the landscape disappears as far as the eye can see.
The artist of these paintings, through his naturalistic rendering, pursuit of plastic monumentality, and landscape settings, fits into the naturalistic tradition of Italian painting, which began with the Renaissance and continued through the 17th century. The artist displays a conventional and popular interpretation of the figures' faces, and for this reason, he can likely be considered an exponent of a local school.
