Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject features all the iconographic attributes of Saint Anthony of Padua. The beardless saint, with his typical tonsure, wears a Franciscan habit. He holds the baby Jesus in his arms and holds the lily, a symbol of purity.
The composition focuses entirely on the figure of the saint, which occupies a large portion of the canvas. The execution primarily reflects the pursuit of sober naturalism, typical of sacred art between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The saint's torso twists freely and naturally, complemented by the voluminous folds of his robe, which give the subject a palpable and tangible volumetric consistency. The technique used is a glazed application that allows for the shadows to be softly blended. Indeed, we can appreciate how the light flows naturally from our right. The details of the hands, rendered with great truth, and the facial features are meticulously crafted.
An analysis of the painting highlights two factors in particular. On the one hand, the pursuit of a total naturalism of the subject, in line with a classicist conception of painting. On the other, in the saint's expression, a certain intimate pietism and a search for religious pathos. The combination of these two factors suggests that the artist dates the painting between the 18th and 19th centuries.
