Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships or boats can be considered part of the genre scene group, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents.
The work is a precious example of an informal style of painting that reveals a more spontaneous and popular character. The subject is rendered in a synthetic pictorial form in a style that can be described as sketchy. Despite this immediacy of execution, the work maintains a remarkable quality of representation. This can be appreciated from the variety of the composition, especially in the liveliness of the figures, who move freely and freely. The depiction of the fortified city in the distance on the left is noteworthy, executed quickly and concisely with remarkable care.
It is difficult to give a precise pictorial date to this work. Certainly, given the pictorial quality and considering the clothing and type of vessel, a 17th-century date can be assumed. The informal and synthetic execution style suggests an artist from a local school of working-class extraction, yet still possessing an excellent hand.
