Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.
The artist's interpretation of this industrial landscape reveals a Post-Impressionist technique. This is evident in the rapid and concise pictorial progression, through which individual brushstrokes construct the forms and reveal their planes and dimensions. Indeed, the composition is entirely compressed in the foreground, and the spatial articulation is resolved in a Cezanne-like interlocking of geometric shapes. Traditional perspective is thus dismantled in favor of a more instinctive conception of space. Chromatically, the entire composition is based on brown and tan tones.
The artist behind this painting seems driven by the desire to depict an industrialized urban reality, characterized by harsh living and working conditions. He does so with a very lively and expressive pictorial language that draws on the stylizations of Post-Impressionism with some more pronounced, typically Expressionist touches.
