Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In this landscape, Arturo Tosi, using the more informal medium of sanguine, achieves an expressionist language, unlike his easel work, which adheres to a predominantly post-Impressionist style. In this drawing, however, the landscape undergoes a significant process of synthesis, reducing it to elementary graphic signs. The space is two-dimensional, and the subjects, reduced to a minimum, are compressed onto the surface of the composition.
Arturo Tosi was born in Busto Arsizio in 1871 and died in Milan in 1956. After attending the Scuola Libera del Nudo in Brera, his training took place primarily in the Scapigliatura movement, with his association with Tranquillo Cremona. He made his debut in 1891 at the Permanente in Milan. He later participated in the Venice Biennale and the International Exhibition in Rome. His works have been exhibited not only in Italy but also abroad: in 1926 in Brighton, in 1927 in Zurich, Leipzig, Amsterdam, and Geneva, in 1929 in Berlin and Paris, in 1930 in Basel, Buenos Aires, and Bern, in 1931 in Stockholm, Baltimore, and Munich, in 1933 in Stuttgart, Kassel, Cologne, Berlin, Dresden, and Vienna.
