Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Antonio Asturi's landscape painting is a blend of diverse influences: he divides his time between more subdued subjects, tied to the realism of a rural and working-class dimension, and views of large modern cities, in which the exaltation of modernity and a frenetic lifestyle prevails.
This work is part of Antonio Asturi's fascination with a rural dimension, a humble, everyday reality. Likewise, his pictorial language is consistent with his treatment of these subjects and also takes on the subdued, authentic tones of direct realism, free from idealistic filters. The composition is expertly set within a concrete space, where objects are harmoniously arranged. Formally, too, Asturi adopts an exquisitely realist register in this painting. His decidedly painterly approach manages to describe reality precisely and objectively, simultaneously capturing atmospheric and existential vibrations. In this way, the artist conveys the truth of the sensory data while respecting the complexity of the human gaze.
Antonio Asturi was a painter originally from Vico Equense, where he was born in 1904 and passed away in 1986. Self-taught, after a brief Futurist interlude he returned to figurative painting. He was strongly attracted to the work of Antonio Mancini. In addition to oil, he also used tempera and Indian ink extensively. Throughout his career, he enjoyed great acclaim and popularity. His work ranged from figures to landscapes, from portraits to still lifes. His carriages and views of the Sorrento coast are famous. He also explored the theme of urban landscapes, with views of cities such as Paris, Barcelona, Venice, and Athens, employing a pictorial language with a post-impressionist feel.
