Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The work has been attributed to Beppe Ciardi or his circle. We are therefore referring to a pictorial movement that spread throughout Italy between the late 19th and early 20th centuries: a school still tied to academicism in terms of its subjects and its overall, extremely classical approach. However, in terms of its pictorial style, it is a movement that looks to the contemporary, bringing to fruition the reflections on Impressionism and Macchiaiolism. In this canvas, too, color plays a fundamental role in constructing the image through the application of large, dense patches of material. In particular, the artist, always exploiting variations in tone, bathes the entire scene in a clear, sunlight while simultaneously ensuring a coherent atmospheric unity.
The work has been attributed to the circle of Beppe Ciardi, a painter born in Venice in 1875 and died in Quinto di Treviso in 1932. He came from a family of painters, son of Guglielmo and brother of Emma. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts under Ettore Tito. He specialized in vedutism and landscape painting, developing his own post-Impressionist language. In Tuscany, he came into contact with the post-Macchiaioli movement. He participated in important exhibitions outside Italy, including in Munich in 1901. In 1912, he took part in the Venice Biennale.
