Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In his watercolor works, Attilio Alfieri achieves an even more pronounced synthesis of phenomenal reality. The landscape is reduced to its bare essentials in a pronounced two-dimensionality. Thin, darting, and calligraphic lines are combined with glazes of transparent color. In some cases, the painter also uses hatching to further emphasize the play of shadows.
Attilio Alfieri was born in Loreto in 1904. He began working as a fresco painter and decorator and in 1923 moved to Milan, where he passed away in 1992. In Milan, Alfieri completed his training by attending evening classes at the Brera Academy and the Sforza Castle. His close association with Birolli, the Chiaristi, and the Corrente group was crucial. His first solo exhibition was held in 1934 at the Circolo Filologico in Milan. He participated in various editions of the Rome Quadriennale, the Venice Biennale, and the Bergamo Prize. In 1939, he became a professor of Fresco and Decoration at the Scuola Unitaria in Milan.
