Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal depictions in art have ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era.
In this work, Attilio Bedini's style is profoundly expressionist. He begins with a brutal formal synthesis that reduces the subject to the bare minimum of elementary pictorial gestures. Thus, we can appreciate how the subject's structure is determined by a broad black line, with a broken, nervous movement. The black line generates disconnected areas, in which the color is applied in a dynamic distribution. The chromatic tones are aggressive and violent, in the best tradition of the Fauvist-Expressionist movement, and do not respect natural truth but have a spiritual and emotional significance.
Attilio Bedini (Ostra 1933 - Segni 2018). A well-rounded artist, painting was in his DNA. He was born into a family rich in artists, and from an early age he accompanied his father Michelangelo, a painter, decorator, mosaicist, and restorer. His exhibitions, such as the most recent one at Palazzo Rospigliosi in Zagarolo in September 2017, have provided unique experiences, allowing visitors to lose themselves in magical visions: from Notre Dame de Paris to mysterious and dreamy Venice, from the fairytale atmosphere of Holland to the warm embrace of the Danube, where he discovered the intensity of two colors—green and blue—that would become so influential in his painting. – His women, sometimes cheerful, sometimes melancholic, sometimes bearing witness to the atrocities of war (Pain in Vietnam, 1978), express the innate sense of freedom, as exemplified by the beautiful painting “Women in Search of Freedom” (2001) on display in the tea room where the meeting took place.
