Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.
The pictorial language with which this still life has been interpreted by artist Attilio Bizzozero is grounded in an eminently classical and traditional pictorial conception, expressed through a perfect naturalistic rendering of the subject. This means, first and foremost, absolute fidelity to sensory data, which are reproduced on the canvas with great realism and mimetic skill. It also requires meticulous attention to the quality of the surfaces and materials reproduced and, above all, careful research into the effects of light incident on them. All of this is contextualized within a concrete space, created by the very volume of the objects. But fundamental, beyond this naturalistic perfection, is the very quality of the pictorial application, which, as we can see in this work, in Attilio Bizzozero is truly extraordinary. This artist's brushstrokes strike a perfect balance between maintaining pure realism and, at the same time, a delicate impressionistic rendering that makes the representation alive, charged with freshness and immediacy. Furthermore, always due to the tonal qualities of the color, everything is unified in a coherent and unitary atmosphere.
Attilio Bizzozero was a painter originally from Varese, born in 1876 and died in 1913. He trained at the Brera Academy in Milan, under the guidance of Gerolamo Induno, whose strong influence he would always feel. He won the silver medal and became an excellent portraitist and still life painter. His reserved nature prevented him from pursuing the career he deserved, and his work was limited to the area around his hometown. Most of his works are held in private collections in and around Varese.
