Description of the work
Description of the work
The work has a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette.
Attilio Freschi's pictorial style in this painting has strong affinities with the avant-garde German Expressionist work Die Brucke. The subject is subjected to a process of synthesis. The composition is simplified and stripped of any detail or three-dimensionality. The rhythm of the composition is determined by a line that gives rise to angular, square shapes. Freschi's work certainly displays greater composure than the Germans. This is evident in his palette, which uses colder, muted tones compared to the Expressionist frenzy. Furthermore, the entire composition seems to be characterized by a certain desire for order and balance.
Attilio Freschi was a painter originally from Castel di Sangro, where he was born in 1899. He died in Rome in 1987. Freschi was an artist who worked primarily in landscapes: solitary seascapes, anonymous buildings. He interpreted these places with a subdued expressionism, based on a bold black line and minimal, balanced compositions.
