Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.

Attilio Pratesi's pictorial language relies primarily on the expressive qualities of color. The drawn structure and perspective grid are completely dismantled to make way for the strength of the brushstrokes. In this work, however, we note an accentuation of color synthesis. The rendering of the object is abstract, determined by broad, transparent glazes representing flower petals: in this way, the artist manages to capture all the reflections of light that make the subject emerge from the dark background, transfiguring it in an exercise of intense yet delicate pictorial vibration. In this expressionistic context, color thus acquires almost emotional qualities, while remaining tied to the description of sensory data.
