Description of the work
Description of the work
Throughout his life, Dario Fo never stopped painting. Learning painting techniques at the Academy of Fine Arts provided him with the tools for performance. We know that drawing and painting were also present in his performances; behind every draft of a play or a literary work, there was first and foremost a drawing and a painting. This very peculiarity allows us to experience the artist from a different perspective. His narrative thus becomes more intimate, and it is precisely at this moment that his stylistic vein emerges, composed of figurative language to which he applies anti-naturalistic, expressionist strains. The style, figurative, almost humorous and satirical, tells us a lot about the artist—this time, a painter—Dario Fo. The drawing, marked by bold, full strokes of color, portrays a naked woman seated on a trumpet player. Scattered throughout the image are specific words describing the subject, also leading the viewer to a possible sonic response. This type of image reflects a distinctly twentieth-century taste, which embraces not only canvas but also paper to push the boundaries of artistic expression. Dario Fo, a multifaceted Italian artist, was a playwright, actor, director, and screenwriter. Having graduated in painting from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, he discovered his passion for theater early on, which in later years led him to become a renowned playwright at the international level. Together with his wife Franca Rame, he founded a theater company: Compagnia Dario Fo-Franca Rame; he served as director and playwright, and she as lead actress and administrator. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1997.
