Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Paolo De Robertis is a painter with a classical conception of landscape painting, so the fundamental principle guiding his hand is always that of a perfect naturalistic/realistic rendering of sensory details. However, his pictorial style always retains a certain free and creative element. The compositions, structured on broad views, derive their spatial depth essentially from the tonal values of the color. The brushstrokes are vigorously synthetic, and the color is applied in patches, constructing the objects with rapid, essential touches. This blend of realism and a lyrical, impressionistic rendering occurs consistently within the Romantic landscape style, typical of the Neapolitan area. The use of light is also evocative, with the strong contrast between the dim light of the vegetation and the clear, bright, and sunny luminosity that pervades the left side of the work.
Paolo De Robertis was born in Naples in 1950, where he lives and works. He remains one of the leading exponents of contemporary landscape painting. He graduated from the Art Institute and draws inspiration from the masters of Neapolitan Vedutismo. This translates into his technique, which involves an abundant use of color rather than drawing in the composition of his works.
