Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In his watercolor landscapes, Pietro Sassi displays a more specifically painterly and synthetic approach. The composition, though lost in the distance, is not based on rigid perspective, but on a structural, highly diluted use of color. Indeed, it is the paint layer that constructs space and objects in a predominantly synthetic style with a patchwork distribution. The painted surface displays great tonal consistency, with the various patches forming a vibrant mosaic of varying shades of color depending on the varying intensity of light and shadow. The execution, therefore, is overall charged with freshness and immediacy, alive with luminous and atmospheric vibrations.
Pietro Sassi (Alessandria, 1834 – Rome, 1905). A landscape painter, both rural and urban. He moved to Rome and traveled throughout Italy (Tyrol, Venice, Lake Maggiore, and the Roman countryside), seeking inspiration for his canvases and watercolors. He also visited Olevano Romano, a village that became a destination for artists, especially foreigners, who loved capturing landscapes from life.
