Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
The abstract work of artist Roberto Papini is distinguished by its rigorous and controlled nature, almost austere in some cases. His artistic approach never completely yields to the informal, maintaining form as the cornerstone of the representation of perceived reality. This form, in some cases, can take on a truly geometric character, as in these variations. Despite these differences, the presence of the circular element, a cornerstone of Papini's abstract art, remains constant, and in this painter it assumes both an iconographic and aesthetic significance. Even the use of color reflects the same desire for rigor and control, arranged in harmonious and balanced relationships.
Roberto Papini was born in 1921 in Ancona, where he attended a technical and professional institute. He began exhibiting in the mid-1950s in local shows, and in 1958 he held his first solo exhibition at the Palazzetto Baviera in Senigallia. In 1960, he participated in numerous exhibitions and showed for the first time at the Galleria Puccini in Ancona, which remained his gallery of choice for decades. The 1960s were a decade rich in opportunities and achievements: in addition to participating in the Premio Marche and local initiatives, he exhibited in numerous cities in Italy and abroad. In 1992, Papini received the Ginestra d'Oro del Conero award for artistic merit. He took part in numerous group and solo exhibitions, displaying works that were always avant-garde for the artistic context of the city of Ancona, where he spent much of his life. At the invitation of the Municipality of Ancona, he participated in the Exhibition of Ancona Painters in Split. His works are held in museums and private collections worldwide.
