Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Leonardo Roda, to whom this painting is attributed, drew inspiration primarily from popular genre scenes.
Leonardo Roda's style presents a perfect fusion of realism and a delicate impressionistic rendering of sensory details. On the one hand, the artist precisely describes the scene in all its details, with a strong sense of urban reality and the everyday life of simple life. On the other, his refined painting technique allows him to convey a sense of immediacy to the canvas, thanks to rapid brushstrokes charged with atmospheric vibrations. Light thus reverberates on objects, but without interfering with the precise description of reality. The entire view is thus characterized by a clear luminosity that is revealed, by contrast, in the play of shadows. The use of a palette of soft and delicate colors also serves this purpose.
The work has been attributed to Leonardo Roda (Racconigi, 1868 – Turin, 1933). A student of Marco Calderini, he held several exhibitions in Milan, Turin, Genoa, and Florence. He painted primarily rural and mountain landscapes. A work by Roda, formerly owned by the Istituto Bancario Italiano, is held in the art collections of the Cariplo Foundation. Another painting is held in the Gaffoglio Museum in Rapallo.
