Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
The work in question appears (both in terms of its popular subject matter and execution style) to be a product of the Neapolitan school of painting between the 19th and 20th centuries, drawing major influence from Domenico Morelli. This style of painting fundamentally relied on a total naturalistic rendering and impeccable technical quality, the fruit of a high level of academic training. This, however, does not prevent it from embracing pictorial innovations and a more modern approach to artistic creation. The strokes are rapid and cursive, more concise and suited to giving the work a sense of freshness and immediacy. In this sense, the execution of the subject takes on a distinctive realist and veristic quality, which refers to a complexity of perception and, consequently, of representation of the subject itself. In this specific case, the artist uses large, dense patches of paint, with a vibrant, luminous polychrome.
