Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," which means to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images.
Winfred Gaul's works are part of the broader movement of the 1960s and 1970s that explored human perception through the visual arts. The most significant achievements in this regard were achieved by artists who identified with trends known as Kinetic Art, Programmed Art, and Optical Art. Winfred Gaul, one of the leading exponents of German Analytical Art, offers an extremely synthetic version, with forms and colors reduced to elementary figuration. With Gaul, the process of abstraction reaches its zeroth degree, in that the color planes themselves give life to the forms, completely freeing the work from any structure. Thus, everything is resolved in an exercise of pure perception that determines the work's chromatic composition.
Winfred Gaul (Düsseldorf, 1928 – 2003). A leading figure in German painting throughout the second half of the 20th century, Gaul also maintained ties with Italy over the years: he worked with Italian galleries and explored the Italian abstraction scene. The German artist, a founder of analytical painting in the 1970s, made a decisive contribution to the movement's international development.
