Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The present work is inspired by a pastoral theme, typical of the literary milieu of Arcadia.
The work stands out for its extraordinary refinement of execution, achieving the highest levels of naturalism in a Baroque-style composition. The animals are depicted with great attention to detail. The painter manages to create an image of perfect and complete naturalism, in which the figures are extremely alive and rich in anatomical detail. All this is achieved with an atmospheric brushstroke, which blends the entire scene into a warm tonal unity. The composition, compressed within the space of the work, presents a dynamic flow of curved lines, typical of seventeenth-century painting.
The work is attributed to Arcangelo Resani (Rome, 1670 – Ravenna, 1740). He was a pupil of Giovan Battista Boncori and was influenced by Giuseppe Maria Crespi. He worked in Siena, Rome, Bologna, Venice, and several cities in Emilia. He was welcomed among the Arcadian shepherds. His self-portrait is in the Uffizi and was exhibited in the exhibition Cristoforo Munari and the Emilian Still Life in 1964.
