Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the Ecce Homo has been widespread in Western religious art since the 15th century, developing throughout the Modern Age. The iconography refers to an episode of Christ's Passion, specifically the moment, reported in the Gospels, in which Pilate presents Jesus to the crowd. The name derives from the words reported by the proconsul at the moment of the presentation ("Behold the Man!"), as reported in the Gospel of John (19, 5). In the effigy of the Ecce Homo, Christ has specific iconographic attributes: a crown of thorns on his head, a staff in his hand, and is covered by a red cloak. The scene, in the artists' interpretations, has had various articulations. The version with Christ alone is very widespread, even in a non-contextualized space. There are also versions in which Pilate himself appears, or one or more soldiers supporting Christ, up to choral scenes in which the crowd of onlookers is represented.
Despite the overall static nature of the scene, the work nevertheless presents a typically Baroque sense of drama and desire to create an engaging narrative. The compositional idea is entirely based on the accentuated contrast between the figure of Christ and that of the centurion at the center of the painting. Isolated from the rest of the scene by the light that illuminates their bodies and highlights their paleness, they are placed in a perfectly symmetrical comparison. On one side, the bestiality of the centurion; on the other, the submissiveness and gentleness of Christ. The scene is entirely compressed in the foreground in a circular arrangement of monumental bodily masses, almost swollen like that of the centurion. Also typical of the Baroque aesthetic is a certain heavy realism, found in the careful description of the faces surrounding Christ (a typical motif of Flemish art). On a pictorial level, the execution is remarkable, characterized by a rapid, cursive touch that does not neglect, as already mentioned, a careful description of the scene. The space is decontextualized and the figures emerge from the dark background with naturalness.
The work has been attributed to Giovan Battista Langetti, one of the most important exponents of the Genoese Baroque style. From analyzing the work, we have seen how several characteristics can be highlighted that link the work to a Baroque aesthetic conception. This is especially true in the dramatic nature of the scene and the marked realism, which aim to intensify the viewer's involvement. The prevalence of dark tones and the accentuated pictorialism, based on a very cursive touch, also hark back to a typically 17th-century, Baroque artistic style.
