Description of the work
Description of the work
Saint Nicholas was the bishop of Myra, also known as Saint Nicholas of Bari. He is one of the most important figures in Christianity, venerated especially in Eastern religion. Indeed, he is depicted in numerous Byzantine art works. Saint Nicholas is the protagonist of numerous legends that spread especially during the Middle Ages.
The panel consciously draws on the Byzantine tradition, reworking it with a contemporary sensibility. Byzantine art retains all its strongly archaic stylistic features, aimed at exalting the supernatural and divine nature of what is depicted. For this reason, the panel exhibits a marked anti-naturalism, still reminiscent of the Middle Ages. The conception of space is non-rational; in the perfectly central depiction, the subject occupies a hieratic position and a superhuman fixity. The facial features are generalized, and the gaze is lost in contemplation of the divine. These are all elements that contribute to the work's transcendent aura.
Paula Tudor was born in 1951 in Niculitel, Romania. She graduated with a degree in painting in 1974 from the Nicolae Grigorescu Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest, where she studied under the renowned painter Traian Bradean. She has been a member of the Romanian Union of Visual Artists since 1994.
