Description of the work
Description of the work
Since the 19th century, when painting began to explore various aspects of everyday life, the circus world has been a theme explored by various artists. With the development of Symbolist and Expressionist movements between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the figure of the acrobat, circus artist, or mask began to gain popularity, as they played a key role in the development of complex iconographies, with hidden and mysterious meanings. Examples include the figures of artists and harlequins.
Immortalized by Picasso in his "blue" and "rose" periods. During the 1970s and 1980s, it became a true genre practiced by many painters, who focused their interest primarily on the figure of the clown.
Augusto Murer's style is a recurring theme in his work: his compositions are based on a fluid rhythm that imbues the painting's surface with a swirling motion. This rhythm is triggered by the free-flowing gesture, determining the curvilinear movements that characterize the pictorial space and, in parallel, constructing forms that follow the same linear progression. In this way, objects are synthesized in a kind of gesture-based expressionism.
Augusto Murer, born in Falcade in 1922 and died in Padua in 1985, was one of the most important Italian sculptors of the second half of the twentieth century. His national recognition came in 1953, following an exhibition in Milan that received the praise of critic Orio Vergani. His work often addressed themes of civic engagement, drawn from his experience as a partisan, but also explored human existence.
