Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
It's clear how Augusto Murer's sculptural nature shines through in his graphic works. In these figures, the artist employs a process of synthesis, using dense hatching or a broad black line to achieve a sculptural chiaroscuro, as if the figure were roughly hewn from stone. The execution is flawless, achieving a supreme level of anatomical naturalism. The expressiveness of the composition also plays on the prevalence of white or diluted opaque color on the background, which interacts with the subject.
Augusto Murer, born in Falcade in 1922 and died in Padua in 1985, was one of the most important Italian sculptors of the second half of the twentieth century. His national recognition came in 1953, following an exhibition in Milan that received the praise of critic Orio Vergani. His work often addressed themes of civic engagement, drawn from his experience as a partisan, but also explored human existence.
