Description of the work
Description of the work
The depiction of animals in art has ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era. In this work, Augusto Murer focuses his research on the figure of the horse. A noble animal, a symbol of beauty and harmony, the horse has repeatedly been a prominent subject in the history of art. Since the fourteenth century, its presence has always been obligatory in battle scenes or equestrian monuments, and for painters, representing it with anatomical precision and naturalistic rendering has always been a challenge.
The silkscreens demonstrate how Augusto Murer's sculptural nature also emerges in his graphic works. In these figures, the artist employs a process of synthesis, using dense hatching to achieve a sculptural chiaroscuro, as if the figure were roughly hewn from stone. The execution is flawless, achieving a supreme level of anatomical naturalism. The expressiveness of the composition also plays on the prevalence of white or diluted opaque color on the background, which interacts with the subject.
Augusto Murer, born in Falcade in 1922 and died in Padua in 1985, was one of the most important Italian sculptors of the second half of the twentieth century. His national recognition came in 1953, following an exhibition in Milan that received the praise of critic Orio Vergani. His work often addressed themes of civic engagement, drawn from his experience as a partisan, but also explored human existence.
