Description of the work
Description of the work
As the title suggests, this is a so-called bambocciata. " Bambocciata" is a specific term referring to a type of painting or artistic representation, born in the 17th century, depicting scenes of everyday life, often humorous or caricatured, with simple, crude characters. The term derives from the Dutch painter Pieter van Laer, known as "Il Bamboccio," who was famous for these depictions of ordinary people and popular situations, far removed from nobility or classical mythology.
The work in question presents a crowded, bustling scene, focusing on the small activities of daily life. The drawing is nervous yet fluid, expertly delineating the bodies of the individual figures, whose chromatic choice also takes precedence over the architecture. and the surrounding nature. The characters, all in the foreground, are busy playing, dancing, and celebrating, in a scene teeming with joy and energy.
The work does not bear any signature, despite this we can place the subject within the culture of the watercolourists active in the nineteenth century, especially around Naples. In that period, the convivial themes that became the object of research with artists such as van Laer, William Hogarth and Pietro Longhi were resumed.
