Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting is inspired by the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). In this case, we have a typical Byzantine-style interpretation.
The composition of this work is clearly an Eastern European artistic product in the Byzantine style, whose language it masterfully reproduces. Indeed, the work has all the characteristics of an ancient icon interpreted through a rather remarkable technique. The Madonna and Child group is rendered with a high degree of abstraction. The figures are frozen in a hieratic fixity and have a supernatural appearance. The Madonna's facial features are particularly oversized, and her large eyes reflect her divine nature. The composition is characterized by accentuated linearity with a broken rhythm. The decorative gilding is also noteworthy.
Although it is difficult to date and place the artist who created this work, it can nevertheless be considered that it presents some modernization traits compared to the most ancient phase of Byzantine art, while always remaining within the framework of its most exquisite tradition.
