Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the work is the vision of a Dominican saint who, supported by two angels, sees the Madonna and Child appear among other angels and cherubs. It is possible that the work represents the "giving of the rosary" to Saint Dominic, a very popular sacred art subject in the modern age.
The work appears well-crafted, and the artist undoubtedly possesses excellent painting technique. The artist appears to operate within a context that combines rigorous classicism with a more specifically Baroque flair. Indeed, we can see how the artist pursues an impeccable naturalistic rendering with a monumentality typical of a classical conception of art. All the figures are compositionally united by a perfect sequence of gestures. However, the classical harmony underlying the depiction of this scene seems to give way to a more Baroque sensibility, as the volumes are enhanced by the robes billowing in curvilinear rhythms. But it is especially in the space surrounding the scene that we can sense the artist's strong Baroque influence. Indeed, in defining the background, the painter indulges in a highly atmospheric pictorial style. Everything is immersed in a dark tonality that blurs the shapes of the clouds, cherubs, and angels witnessing the saint's ecstasy. All this creates a very suggestive contrast, thanks to the use of light, where the vision stands out against an indefinite and evanescent space.
As we can see from an analysis of this work, the artist moves between a rigorous classicism and a more whimsical, Baroque-inspired sensibility. Based on these elements, the work can be dated between the 17th and 18th centuries. The artist demonstrates an excellent technique that allows him to achieve a perfect naturalistic rendering combined with highly theatrical pictorial effects of light and atmosphere.
