Unknown Author - Saint Vladimir and Saint Nicholas

These two icons are a beautiful example of modern Byzantine art. They depict two of the most venerated saints in Orthodox worship: Saint Vladimir and Saint Nicholas.

These two paintings consciously draw on the Byzantine tradition, reworking it with a contemporary sensibility. Byzantine art has always retained all its strongly archaic stylistic features, aimed at exalting the supernatural and divine nature of what is depicted. For this reason, the two works exhibit a marked anti-naturalism, still reminiscent of the Middle Ages. The conception of space is non-rational: in the perfectly central depiction, the subjects are hieratic and pose superhumanly still. The facial features are generalized, and the gaze is lost in contemplation of the divine. These are all elements that contribute to the work's transcendent aura. Also noteworthy, on a formal level, is the work's remarkable pictorial quality, which, despite the anti-naturalism inherent in the Byzantine style, presents concrete and realistic figures.
