Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is a copy of the famous "Madonna della Seggiola" created by Raphael Sanzio around 1513-1514 and housed in the Palatine Gallery in Florence. The iconographic theme stems from the fundamental theme of Western sacred art, the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced).
The copy respects all the Raphaelesque characteristics of the painting. First and foremost, the compositional scheme, which demonstrates the close connection between Raphael's work and Leonardo da Vinci, is a direct reflection of the aspiration to a classical ideal of harmony and unity in artwork typical of the sixteenth-century Renaissance. The group is perfectly enclosed within an ideal pyramid. Furthermore, within this scheme, its slight yet intricate torsion and movements are calibrated by precise relationships of correspondence and balance. The figure of the Madonna, displaying a typically sixteenth-century monumentality enhanced by the ample and complex drapery of her dress, moves with great naturalness, perfectly blending into the space around her. The work features a sfumato technique, still reminiscent of Leonardo, which allows the two figures to be perfectly integrated into the golden background. But it is even more in the definition of the faces that one can admire the extraordinary mobility and indefiniteness of the facial features typical of the later phase of the Renaissance.
