Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of battle or scenes related to war are present throughout the history of Western art and beyond. Evidence of this can be found in ancient mosaics, such as the famous Battle of Issus, now preserved at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. Executed for celebratory, historiographical, or narrative purposes, battle paintings remained popular until the Romantic era of 19th-century history painting, as in this case.
The work is highly interesting as a testament to Romantic-era history painting. Naturally, as required by this function, the style is highly didactic, designed to create an eloquent and evocative, subtly idealized representation of the event. From this perspective, therefore, style takes a back seat, and the drawing technique used to achieve a detailed narrative, with attention to detail, both historical and fictional, takes on greater importance.
This print was probably created between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Indeed, based on the scene depicted, the subject is likely a romantic and contemporary interpretation of a medieval scene. The artist demonstrates excellent pictorial skill in the natural rendering of the scene and its surrounding landscape.
