Description of the work
Description of the work
The scene depicts a farmer plowing a field with the help of two large white oxen. The man, seen in profile or from behind, wears a dark jacket and a stiff-brimmed hat, typical of work attire of the time. The composition is simple yet effective: the lower half of the canvas features freshly turned soil, while the upper half features a uniform, almost flat sky, clearly dividing the visual space and accentuating the sense of toil. The work is part of the realist painting movement of the late 19th century, with clear references to the Macchiaioli technique. The composition is characterized by broad areas of color and a marked contrast between surfaces, while the artist uses bold brushstrokes to convey the solidity of the figures and the texture of the terrain. The attention to detail and the pictorial quality demonstrate a particular sensitivity in depicting rural reality. Although the work is unsigned on the front, there is an inscription on the frame, which is currently not clearly decipherable from the available image. This element leaves open the possibility of future attributions, but at present does not allow for a definitive identification of the artist. The style and compositional structure nevertheless suggest the hand of a painter active in the second half of the 19th century, likely in Tuscany. The work shows clear affinities with the painting of the Macchiaioli: the choice of the peasant subject, the simplicity of the scene, and the pictorial quality reveal an artist attentive to everyday reality and close to the concerns of that movement.
