Description of the work
Description of the work
The work in question is part of a series of four prints depicting Petrarch's four triumphs: Death, Fame, Time, and Divinity, now preserved at the Attilio Hortis Civic Library in Trieste.
Created by Silvester Pomarede, a German engraver active in Rome in the second half of the 18th century, they were based on four Triumphs attributed at the time to Titian. At least three of the four belonged to Giovanni Michillo. The four Triumphs from which Pomarede based the prints were not, in fact, executed by Titian, but by Bonifacio De' Pitati (Verona 1487-Venice 1553). In this case, we have an example of the Triumph of Divinity in which Christ's chariot is accompanied by the host of evangelists, prophets, saints, and martyrs.
Formally, the work has a strong aesthetic impact due to the complexity of its composition and the high-tech engraving technique inspired by sixteenth-century art. The present work is also enhanced by the coloring.
