Description of the work
Description of the work
The first view of Chiaia from the West, dedicated to the English general Louis of Walmoden, with 30 topographical references, refers to the coastal area with the large fountain in the foreground, with the painting of the view relating to a viewpoint located approximately halfway along the entire coastline, not far from the ancient palace of the Marquis Della Valle Mendoza (with a strong tower protruding from the façade and clearly visible in the background on the right). The background is the Posillipo hill.
The engraving was made based on a painting by Gabriele Ricciardelli by Antoine Alexandre Joseph Cardon (Brussels, 1739 – 1822), an internationally renowned engraver, active in Vienna, Rome and Naples.
The work is part of a pair of engravings completed by the View of Chiaia from the East.
