Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. Among Bruno Azimonti's watercolor works are the evocative urban view and scenes of everyday and popular life.
Artist Bruno Azimonti, specializing in watercolor painting, has masterfully interpreted this technique, enhancing its characteristics in a modern and original vision. This is evident in his scenes of everyday life: the painter begins with reality, perhaps that of a photograph, and transfigures it into the intense expressionism of his watercolor technique. Reality thus becomes a total pictorial vibration with decidedly existential overtones, the fruit of an exercise in pure perception on the part of the artist. Formally, this is expressed by maximizing the expressive potential of diluted color. Bruno Azimonti's refined sensibility manifests itself in recording the effect of light on objects, yet this exercise is carried out with a strong poetic sense that shapes the representation of sensory data. Thus, light almost dissolves objects, transferring them to the timeless dimension of memory. Light and color act in unison, and this enhances the art of watercolor in a coherent representation that maintains its connection to reality while translating it into a highly lyrical dimension.
Bruno Azimonti was born in Cadenabbia di Griante in 1909 and died in Menaggio, in the province of Como, on December 25, 2002. His father taught him to draw at a very young age, and during his high school years, he would give drawings to friends as gifts. His teacher was Gianni Breudelin, one of the finest illustrators of the natural beauty and most evocative corners of Lake Como. His determination and artistic vocation later found valuable support from another renowned artist, the painter Stagliati, who often stayed in Cadenabbia during the summers.
After the initial success, the war events precipitated and
Azimonti, with thousands of other compatriots, found himself at the centre of the famous
retreat from the Don. With the end of the war he was able to resume his interrupted career,
establishing himself as an undisputed master of watercolor and participating in
numerous exhibitions and reviews.
