Description of the work
Description of the work
The canals of Venice became a subject of interest for the painter, where vibrant color schemes portray a city unlike any other. The glimpse we see comes from the painter's interpretation of the landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction. In the history of art, landscape painting began with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, followed by atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, and finally culminating in the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The canvas's expressionistic style lends a nostalgic and dramatic feel, thanks in part to the use of dark colors, with a palette ranging from red to black, featuring highly dynamic gradations; this dynamism is enhanced by the rapid, dense brushstrokes. The coloristic style, as well as the dramatic landscape, are reminiscent in some places of the painting of Gino Bonichi, known as Scipione, an important artist of the Roman school of the 1920s. Indeed, the work in question seems to revisit that violent and highly personal expressionism that seeks to convey an emotional narrative.
As regards the artist in question, we do not have a certain attribution, since our research has revealed the figure of Jean Barto, an artist born in 1931, but it is not possible to affirm the work's maternity to this artist.
