Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
In this delightful genre scene, we can appreciate how artist Bartolo employs an elegantly graphic style. The entire composition, two-dimensional against its solid red background, is outlined with a very thin white line. The representation is reduced to a minimum, seeking compositional refinement through the balance and rhythm of the line. Note how the figures of the prelates are delineated with a curvilinear stroke, expressing a certain illustrator's irony. The imposing structure of the church, on the other hand, seeks depth with its rational lines.
Bartolo is an artist with an elegant graphic style rich in compositional balance, refinement and irony.
