The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.

The work exemplifies the artistic language developed by Alfredo Gonzales Basurco, a painter who relies on a strongly hermetic aesthetic. The subject loses all contact with reality, and the composition is constructed through a juxtaposition of abstract elements and different textures, creating an extremely complex surface. The silkscreen thus demonstrates Basurco's strong experimental nature, evident in the variety of images and material consistencies that comprise this work, as well as in the artist's ability to manage such complexity within an extremely coherent and balanced composition. More specifically, the overlapping of gestures, signs, and layers of color in Basurco's works gives rise to abstract entities that take on the appearance of surreal totems.

Alfredo Gonzáles Basurco was born in 1927 in Arequipa, Peru. In 1960, he held his first solo exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art (IAC). He also received the Ignacio Merino National Award and an Honorable Mention at the Second International Biennial of Mexico. Gonzáles Basurco participated in the First Paris Biennial, the VIII National Watercolor Salon in Lima, and exhibited at the Pan-American Union in Washington. In 1960, he traveled to Europe, following a solo exhibition at the San Marcos Gallery in Lima. That same year, he exhibited at the Tedesco Gallery in Paris. His artistic career has led him to exhibit in France, Peru, Italy, and the United States. Gonzáles Basurco was awarded the Gold Medal by the President of the Chamber of Deputies at the Gubbis International Prize in Rome in 1963; the Gold Medal of the Ministry of Fine Arts and the First Prize, Via Margutta, for Abstract Painting in 1966 in Rome.
