Benedetto Spadaro. The concreteness of happiness.

Benedetto Spadaro was born in Monterosso Almo, Sicily, in 1952. He lives and works in Rome. His artistic practice is multifaceted and driven by an experimental spirit that leads him to create not only an intense pictorial output but also imaginative installations. But the underlying element of Benedetto Spadaro's artistic practice is, above all, the awareness that our lives are permeated by an intense happiness that can be found in every act of existence. This pursuit of happiness, therefore, becomes the foundation of a pictorial approach that is nothing other than the need to express, in concrete images, the joy we can find in every aspect of our lives. Paradoxically, when it comes to painting, the only way to express concreteness is to completely detach oneself from phenomenal reality, to decisively embark on the path of abstraction. Only in this way is it possible to create images that do not exist in nature, the only ones suited to expressing the artist's most intimate and profound self. This, in fact, is the path taken by Benedetto Spadaro in his pictorial production, aiming to transfigure his pursuit of the happiness of existence into concrete images. This vision of pictorial practice is clearly expressed in a pair of works with the emblematic titles, "The Colors of the Soul 1 and 2." In these two paintings, it is clear that Benedetto Spadaro wishes to abandon any type of figuration to indulge in a whimsical, polychrome gesture. The brushstrokes, thick, dense with color and luminous reflections, reflect the image of an ecstatic soul, ever ready to welcome the joy offered even in the seemingly most insignificant aspects of everyday life. Thus, a veritable explosion of color is found in a work like "Black Hole," where the anxiety expressed in the title nevertheless gives way to the same ecstatic emotion, once again represented by the gesture and the chromatic material. Benedetto Spadaro's language is essentially informal, but in some cases the artist leaves hints at a contemplation of creation, as in "Di sole e di azzurro," "Foresta tropicali," or "Ghiacciaio rosso" (the latter work also featuring a certain level of figuration). But Benedetto Spadaro doesn't want to limit himself to the earthly aspects of our existence; his research extends beyond, taking on a truly spiritual connotation. This includes works in which the artist rediscovers a certain desire for form, but with the aim of creating images of great symbolic impact that transfer the joy of existence into a cosmic dimension. Large suns spreading their colorful rays dominate works like "The Event Horizon" or "In the Dimension of Being Everything Converges in Eternity." Even the titles reveal that behind Benedetto Spadaro's artistic practice and his search for an ecstatic and joyful dimension lies a profound philosophical and spiritual meditation, further confirmed by his biography. This meditation, in some works, takes on a more specifically religious connotation, as confirmed by a work like "Power and Glory," where the symbolism of pure forms takes on the iconic character of a mystical representation.
