Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; up to the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Bepi Longo's landscape painting is inspired by his places. Evocative glimpses of narrow streets recur throughout his works.
Venetian or solitary fishermen's huts on the lagoon.
Bepi Longo's style, characterized by a very dark palette, typically presents landscapes that contrast somewhat with other painters of the same cultural milieu, where a certain chiaroscuro prevails. However, in this work, the artist indulges in the reflections and shimmers of the lagoon water, creating a composition filled with light. The composition of his views, however, remains unchanged, relying less on Neo-Impressionist hatching and more on heavy, markedly Expressionist brushstrokes that synthesize objects by arranging them on a two-dimensional surface.
Bepi Longo, a Venetian painter, was born in 1920 and died in 1961. After gaining his first painting experiences at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, he debuted in 1948 with his first group exhibition. Having died at just 41, Bepi Longo had a short but enriching career as a painter. He exhibited his works in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Venice, Rovigo, Trieste, Rome, Ravenna, Badia Polesine, Florence, Turin, Padua, and many other cities in Italy and abroad.
