Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Bepi Longo's style presents a landscape painting that somewhat contrasts with that of other painters of the same cultural milieu, where a certain chiaroscuro prevails. Bepi Longo, on the other hand, seems to be unattracted by the lagoon's light, instead dedicating himself to a painting style with dark, almost shadowy tones. Even the composition of his views, rather than relying on Neo-Impressionist hatching, is based on a heavy, markedly Expressionist brushstroke that synthesizes objects by arranging them on a two-dimensional surface.
Bepi Longo, a Venetian painter, was born in 1920 and died in 1961. After gaining his first painting experiences at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, he debuted in 1948 with his first group exhibition. Having died at just 41, Bepi Longo had a short but enriching career as a painter. He exhibited his works in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Venice, Rovigo, Trieste, Rome, Ravenna, Badia Polesine, Florence, Turin, Padua, and many other cities in Italy and abroad.
