Description of the work
Description of the work
During the 1950s and 1960s, the so-called poetics of the object began to spread in European and American art. Harking back to the readymades of Dadaist memory, a new wave of groups or movements emerged that repurposed everyday objects as works of art. The departure from traditional Dada lay in the strong influence of Abstract Expressionism, which led to the reconfiguration of objects with new languages and new stimuli.
Bernard Aubertin is an artist inspired by the poetics of Nouveau Réalisme or New Dada, reclaiming objects that appear to have reached the end of their useful life and giving them new meaning through an artistic process. In this sense, the work is emblematic in its use of used, now burned matches. The artist's gesture is fundamental to the idea of using objects that, taken individually, would have no aesthetic value and compressing them into a regular space to achieve an artistic effect, exploiting the expressive effects created by the burns.
Bernard Aubertin is an artist originally from Fontenay-aux-Roses, France. His career developed primarily in the 1960s within the Düsseldorf-based Group Zero. Aubertin draws on the Poetics of the Object movement, but with a particular predilection for the action of fire. Flames act on objects, creating new forms and nuances. This is true in the Dessins de Feu sur Papier series, where the strictly red sheet of paper hosts a composition of matchboxes, and in the Fer Brûlé series, where the metal sheets are melted to reveal the red background.
