Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In the case of Siciliano and his New York views, we can find a certain spiritual affinity with the American Hyperrealism represented by Edward Hopper.
Bernardo Siciliano's urban landscapes, inspired by views of New York City, contain several interesting elements. On the one hand, the painter tends toward meticulous hyperrealism, but in this work on paper we can appreciate Siciliano's inclination toward a more gestural style, vibrant with existentialism. An elegant and balanced purity of volume remains constant throughout the composition. Chromatically, the entire surface of the canvas is characterized by a dark metropolitan atmosphere.
Bernardo Siciliano was born in Rome in 1969, the son of the celebrated writer and playwright Enzo Siciliano. Stimulated from childhood by an intellectual environment, his interest in painting began at an early age. His education took place primarily in New York, shaping his style through inspiration from various artistic movements. His views of the American city, full of realism and poignant intimacy, are renowned. In New York, Bernardo Siciliano is also a professor at the New York Academy of Art.
