Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is part of Bernd Koberling's "Tema Celeste" series. In these works, the artist, rooted in an informal and abstract expressionist aesthetic, reconnects with reality, creating small scenes drawn from everyday life, sketches of a popular dimension.
The work is therefore highly interesting as a testament to Bernd Koberling's figurative production. The composition is highly instinctive, constructed entirely through color, which definitively transcends drawing in a pronounced synthesis of the represented elements. This execution method could be described as post-Impressionist, as the immediate recording of sensory data is combined with a strong emotional component, arising directly from the artist's sensibility. But the most significant aspect is that this sensibility is expressed in a truly vigorous, already expressionist and abstract, pictorial stroke, and in the gestural expressiveness typical of Koberling's Informal works. The color, rather diluted, gives rise to a dynamic and iridescent chromatic mixture of warm hues.
Bernd Koberling was born in Berlin in 1938. Koberling completed an apprenticeship as a cook from 1955 to 1958 and practiced this profession until 1968. From 1958 to 1960, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin with Max Kaus. From 1969 to 1970, Koberling was awarded a scholarship at Villa Massimo in Rome. After Italy, he remained in Cologne until 1974. Between 1974 and 1982, Koberling created the "Jute Pictures," paintings featuring simple natural motifs in bold, muted colors on a rough surface. In the 1980s, his large-format "People and Animals" were seen for the first time. These expressive paintings made Koberling one of the fathers of the "New Wild" movement. Since 1988, he has been a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts. In the 1990s, his color palette in the "Basic Forces" study became predominantly dark. This contrasts with the "Disco Images" (1999–2012), which appear as colorful, monumental watercolors. Bernd Koberling lives between Berlin and Iceland.
