Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Throughout his career, Lido Bettarini developed a unique approach to landscape painting. Starting from the Tuscan pictorial tradition, represented by Ottone Rosai, he then turned toward surrealism, leading to a more dreamlike definition of reality. Formally, his application is extremely delicate, composed of light, overlapping layers. His cityscapes are renowned, where urban agglomerations are arranged, level upon level, like fragile houses of cards. Even in his seascapes, Lido Bettarini's exquisiteness is reflected in his use of color, which, unfolding in broad, compact chromatic zones, encompasses reality, almost crystallizing it. The composition is characterized by geometric linearity, and the hues have a more spiritual and emotional than naturalistic quality. The entire work is executed with the dense, sulfurous brushwork typical of Lido Bettarini, confirming his magical vision of reality.
Lido Bettarini was born in Sesto Fiorentino in 1927. From a young age, he was strongly drawn to drawing and painting. Born into a family of ceramists, he was introduced to his father's craft at Richard Ginori at a young age, introducing him to the world of renowned Tuscan craftsmanship. He immediately distinguished himself in model making, but his vivid imagination soon pushed him to seek broader and freer horizons. He began frequenting the studio of Gino Pozzi, who encouraged him, enrolling him in the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he attended the School of Nude for three years and graduated. He studied the paintings of the great masters in Florentine museums, but also developed a passion for modern art. He frequented the studios of various artists, including those of Ottone Rosai and Settala. He always traveled and lived in Italy and abroad in search of new images and inspiration. He lived for a long time in Cannes, where he passed away in 2019.
