In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. Angelo Biancini's work is important precisely for this interpretation. He, in fact, successfully revitalized the genre of ceramic sculpture with a completely original language, rooted in tradition yet nourished by a thoroughly contemporary expressive tension.

This work is part of a series of bas-reliefs in which Angelo Biancini draws on the tradition of the historiated panel, recontextualizing it with a contemporary expressive language. His works feature narrative scenes in which the dynamism of the narrative is enhanced by a process of synthesis and abstraction. The figures are rendered with sharp, geometric forms, inserted into a complex space constructed from multiple viewpoints. In some cases, Biancini also opts for a more symbolist type of representation, with a system of figures clearly inspired by medieval imagery, yet with a thoroughly contemporary, hermetic aesthetic.

Angelo Biancini was an artist born in Castel Bolognese in 1911 and passed away in 1988. He was an important sculptor and ceramist, his name remains closely linked to Faenza, the city where he worked until his death. He joined the Istituto d'Arte per la Ceramica in 1942, later taking over the chair of Plastic Arts from Domenico Rambelli. He held this position until 1981, helping to train several generations of artists and ceramists in his studio within the school. Biancini achieved expressive heights and formal tensions that brought him closer to the most innovative artists of the period, and he identified the linguistic heritage that, in the post-World War II period, would characterize the works that would lead to success and official recognition. These years saw his participation in the first major exhibition of Italian sculpture at the Galleria della Spiga in Milan and two solo exhibitions in Milan, at the Galleria dell'Illustrazione Italiana in 1948 and at the Galleria San Fedele in 1956, which further brought him to the attention of national critics.
