Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," which means to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images.
In this composition, Bice Lazzari's primary reference is the historical avant-garde of Abstraction, with its study of pure forms and colors. Think of Kandinsky's abstractions or Mondrian's Neoplasticism. In this mixed-media work on paper, Lazzari's perception is reshaped with a pronounced mechanomorphism that introduces a regular and rational grid. In this space, the artist stages a chromatic vibration from shades of gray to black.
Bice Lazzari, 1900, Venice — 1981, Rome. In the Venetian artistic scene of the 1930s, animated by the Circolo Artistico di Palazzo dei Piombi and the Caffè on the Zattere, she frequented Carlo Scarpa and Mario De Luigi, and began a journey into avant-garde and rationalist research. In 1935, she moved to Rome, where she exhibited murals and decorative panels at major exhibitions of the regime. The 1950s saw her first major recognition: in Rome, she held solo exhibitions at the Galleria La Cassapanca in 1951, at the Galleria Schneider in 1954, and at the Galleria La Salita in 1958, the same year she also exhibited at the Galleria del Cavallino in Venice. Between the late 1950s and 1963, she moved towards Informalism, abandoning oil paints to explore the application of other materials such as glues, sand, tempera, and later acrylics. In 1964 he started from scratch, renouncing matter and color in favor of simpler means, often lines drawn with graphite on a monochrome background.
