Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge resulted in a total rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their exploration focuses instead on the material with which they compose their works. This work by Gastone Biggi is part of a line of works in which the Roman artist resolves the representation of reality through material and gesture. This approach is consistent with Biggi's artistic path, always characterized by a progressive emptying of form in favor of expressive synthesis, which, in works like this, clearly reaches its highest level.
Gastone Biggi's artistic language tends to minimize phenomenal reality, but this exercise in reducing sensory data helps the artist go beyond the appearance of things and grasp their true essence. What remains is the spiritual and emotional concentration of the subject, which Biggi seeks to connect with by eliminating any formal frills. In this case, Gastone Biggi demonstrates his full commitment to an informal poetics with a powerfully textured execution of the painting. The subject is resolved by leaving the viewer with no reference point. The use of water-based paint, in fact, creates a compact texture on the surface of the work that, to the eye, almost seems reminiscent of marble. The only glimmer of life and movement Biggi allows us is his gesture, which manifests itself in a thin white stripe at the bottom of the work, which cuts into the compact material of the chromatic texture. Although extremely minimal, the impact of this gesture is truly evocative, charged with enormous expressive and existential force.
Gastone Biggi was born in Rome in 1925 and passed away in Langhirano in 2014. In addition to being a painter, he was also a sculptor, musicologist, and writer. His artistic career began in 1947, but it was in 1962 that his key work, "Birth of a Point," was published. It laid out the foundation for his lifelong exploration of the sign module. This exploration culminated in the formation of Gruppo 1 that same year. Gastone Biggi held exhibitions in major Italian cities and abroad, including Montreal, Moscow, New Delhi, Stockholm, New York, Boston, Niigata in Japan, London, Madrid, Banja Luka, and Ciudad Bolívar in Venezuela.
