Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This drawing by Sergio Cirno Bissi is a beautiful example of naturalistic landscape rendering. The view is depicted with a soft, light touch, using the subtle nuances of charcoal to create delicate shadows. Compared to this painter's easel work, which, with its marked synthesis, can be described as post-impressionist if not expressionist, this drawing displays greater attention to sensory detail. Yet the artist does, of course, introduce a certain descriptive lyricism, thanks to a vibrant hatching that ensures a fresh execution.
Sergio Cirno Bissi was born in Carmignano in 1902 and passed away in Florence in 1987. Before becoming a professional painter, Bissi was an internationally renowned actor in the Vaudeville Theatre. He traveled halfway around the world, from Oslo to Cape Town, from Berlin to London, to France and Spain. These exciting years opened his eyes to the beauty of European culture and shaped his pictorial language, somewhere between Post-Impressionism and Expressionism. Bissi exhibited throughout Italy, and his works are held in private collections in France, England, the United States, and South America.
