Description of the work
Description of the work
The codex of Giovanni Boccaccio (ms. Holkam Misc. 49), written and illuminated in Ferrara at the court of Borso d'Este (1467), is preserved at the Bodleian Library in Oxford (facsimile edition and commentary 2013).
Commissioned by Borso d'Este as a gift to Teofilo Calcagnini, his favorite dignitary, the codex contains miniatures by Taddeo Crivelli, who had played such a major role in the creation of the precious Este Bible.
A 17th-century bookplate attests that the manuscript belonged to the Order of Observant Franciscans of the Convent of Santo Spirito in Reggio Emilia; the volume was subsequently purchased in Italy, in the second decade of the 18th century, by Thomas Coke, later appointed Earl of Leicester.
The codex, preserved in the sumptuous home of Holkham Hall for over two hundred and fifty years, was sold by the heirs and since 1981 has been one of the most precious heirlooms of the Bodleian Library.
